What is a musical?
A musical is a play or film in which singing and/or dancing play a big role.

Where is Broadway and what does it have to do with musicals? Broadway is a wide street in New York. It is known for having some of the best musicals. The Theatre District is home to 40 large professional theatres. Each of these theatres seats 500 or more people.

When ? 1950 to 1990, but why is this time so important in the development of the Broadway musical? Rodgers and Hammerstein pioneer a new form of narrative storytelling that brings a new age of musical classics.

Who was involved in musicals at this time?(Composers) Rodgers, Hammerstein, Peter Allen, Steve Allen

Why were musicals so popular? They had catchy songs and flamboyant dances to grab the audiences attentions. Musicals also had a story in them which inticed people.

How were musicals created for Broadway? When musicals were first created, what mattered most were the songs. It was important that they were catchy enough to amuse the audience. But, beginning in the 1930s a story or narrative became the spine of the musical.




1950: Golden Age
Rodgers and Hammerstein pioneer a new form of narrative storytelling that brings a new age of musical classics.
1960:Changing Times
The Americans reinvented their own traditions and musicals.
1970:Lauren Bacall becomes a Broadway Star and "1776" is the first musical to play the White House.
1980:Broadway's growth is rapidly increasing and is now globally known.
1990:"A Chorus Line" finally closes, 15 years after it opened. The 46th Street Theatre is renamed in remembrance of Richard Rodgers.
